Description:

Position Summary
The Staff Nurse I will provide patient care, nursing procedures, and specialized expertise for the University of Illinois Psychiatry and Psychology Outpatient Clinic in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria. The position works under general supervision.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform highly skilled patient care; provide counseling to patient callers and communicate patient care plans; manage medication refills for patients, physicians and pharmacies including calling refills into pharmacies, sending or faxing required documentation, and alerting physicians to any refill concerns that may arise; perform medication crosschecks; establish short-range goals for patients; engage assigned patients in lifestyle and health counseling in such areas as smoking cessation, alcohol reduction, medication compliance, etc.; and create patient care plans with clinicians.
  • Complete a basic patient review of systems; notify clinicians of any significant clinical and/or data concerns and delegate assignments to clinic staff when appropriate; obtain laboratory and other clinical data and properly record in charts; provide basic information for assigned patients under the supervision of a clinician; make external referrals as requested by clinician; establish and coordinate clinic procedures for staff and clinicians to follow for coordinated patient care; set priorities according to physician orders; and work closely with other nursing staff for effective patient care, medication prior authorizations, and patient assistance in obtaining medications.
  • Coordinate Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) procedures with patients and hospital, coordinate Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) procedures with patients and clinicians, develop procedure processes for clinic staff and clinicians to follow, and demonstrate procedures and techniques to staff when necessary.
  • Coordinate chart audits of clinic charts, address charting issues with clinicians and staff, keep clinicians and staff informed of any changes in procedures or policies, coordinate care with providers, notify supervisor and Outpatient Division Director of ways to improve efficiency, assist in coverage of Outpatient Center staff when necessary or during unexpected absences.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Qualifications:

    Minimum Qualifications

    1. Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
    2. Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications
    3. Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers
    4. Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training
    5. Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
    Demonstrated experience providing nursing care to adult psychiatric patients required.
