Position Purpose
Under general supervision, conducts analysis and risk assessment to estimate financial outcomes. Responsible for the collection of data, selection of parameters, and calculations involved with conducting actuarial analysis. Evaluate profitability of products and recommend corrective action. Act as a steward of data quality by discovering and discussing data anomalies and issues with underwriting, claims, accounting, and IT. This is a hands-on position with more advanced analyses that creates value-added analytics. Should have an aptitude for problem solving, be able to manage multiple project deadlines at once, and be able to effectively communicate the results of your analyses to other departments and management.
Note: we prefer that the selected person be based in our Peoria, IL office, but will consider someone working out of our Chicago, IL office.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Build exposure rating models for underwriting
Analyze the costs and benefits of risk transferred under reinsurance agreements via pricing analysis and risk modeling
Fit loss severity distributions
Analyze loss trends and emerging risks across multiple lines of business within the specialty insurance portfolio
Measure and monitor risk-adjusted returns across the portfolio to support performance evaluation
New product development for organic opportunities
Increased limits studies
Actual vs. Expected analysis
Education & Experience
Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, actuarial science or a related discipline
4+ years of experience in Property & Casualty actuarial roles
Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society (ACAS) or near designation
Prior experience working in a specialty insurance or reinsurance environment is highly desirable
Knowledge, Skills, & Competencies
Ability to provide input or make recommendations to improve Risk Services functions
Results orientated
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to convey technical insights to cross-functional teams
Ability to make good business judgments based on sound actuarial analysis
Regularly offers ideas for enhanced actuarial analysis and occasionally acts independently to execute
Demonstrates capabilities on more complex projects
Deep understanding of reinsurance structures and their financial impact on insurers’ portfolios
Types of projects include advanced statistical analysis, reinsurance evaluation, develop and implement rating models, individual risk pricing, due diligence on large/high risk opportunities, making formal recommendations to management, leading predictive analytics projects
Compensation Overview
The base salary range for the position is listed below. Please note that the base salary is only one component of our robust total rewards package at RLI. The salary offered will take into account a number of factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, scope & responsibilities of the role, qualifications/credentials, talent availability & specialization, as well as business needs. The below range may be modified in the future.
