Description
Duties: Under the direction of the Aquatics Supervisor, the Aquatics Manager is responsible for:
- Supporting the recruiting, onboarding, and training of seasonal and part-time lifeguard personnel.
- Leading the recruitment, training, scheduling, and supervising all swim instructors.
- Implementing and quality assurance oversight of the Park District’s swim lesson and aquatic fitness programs, including curriculum development, instructor support, and ongoing program evaluation.
- Managing swim program logistics, including processing registrations, cancellations, class transfers, and assisting with the development and scheduling of program offerings.
- Leading the seasonal operation and coordination of the two outdoor aquatic facilities during the summer months, including staff supervision, scheduling, and support of daily facility functions.
- Collaborating with community groups to promote “Safety Around Water” initiatives.
- Assisting the Aquatics Supervisor in general pool operations and facility coverage as needed.
- Maintaining accurate records for swim lesson registrations, attendance, and program performance.
- Supporting the planning and execution of aquatic special events and community outreach initiatives.
- Serving as a backup lifeguard/swim instructor when necessary.
- Performing all other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions:
- To perform all essential lifesaving and CPR skills in the event of an emergency, including the ability to remove a person from the water.
- Ability to move and connect pool chemical containers weighing up to 50 lbs.
Qualifications
Education: A bachelor’s degree in Recreation or a related field is preferred. Extensive experience in a similar position with comparable duties and responsibilities may be substituted for all or part of the educational requirement.
Experience: One to two years of related experience in aquatic management, including lifeguarding, swim instruction, staff development, and basic pool management.
Certifications:
- Ellis & Associates Lifeguard Training, or able to obtain.
- Ellis & Associates Lifeguard Instructor Training certification required or able to obtain.
- Ellis & Associates Swim Instructor certification required or able to obtain.
- Desired Water Safety Instructor certification or equivalent.
- Aquatic Facility Operator and/or Certified Pool Operator certification is required or able to obtain.
Knowledge and Ability:
- Knowledge of swim instruction techniques and class progression for a variety of age groups and skill levels.
- Ability to train, schedule, and evaluate part-time swim instructors.
- Ability to assist in organizing and conducting staff in-service trainings.
- Working knowledge of lifeguard responsibilities and aquatic safety protocols.
- Ability to support community outreach related to aquatic programming and water safety.
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with staff, patrons, and community partners.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Basic understanding of pool operations and safety, including chemical handling.
- Ability to be professional, respectful, accountable, and innovative; follow safety procedures; and promote equity with both internal and external customers.
- Proficient in or able to learn registration software and point-of-sale systems.
- Requires a valid Illinois State Driver’s License.
- Working knowledge of general operations for the entire Park District and ability interpret this information as needed.
