Description

Duties: Under the supervision of the Peoria Zoo Custodial and Grounds Maintenance Foreman the Custodian is responsible for:

  • Help coordinate regular inspections of all mechanical, plumbing, electrical, heating and refrigeration/freezing equipment; inspecting vehicles as required; inspecting playground equipment as required.
  • Report all major equipment failure immediately to the Foreman for procedural decisions.
  • Make reports to the Foreman concerning minor equipment and facility repair.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on assigned mechanical, plumbing, electrical, heating and refrigeration/freezing equipment.
  • Maintain public walkways to the zoo, the grounds and park.
  • Perform minor carpentry, plumbing, and electrical repair.
  • Construct animal holding crates.
  • Assist in moving and loading animals when needed.
  • Participate in all mowing and landscaping at the Peoria Zoo and Park.
  • Assist part-time employees assigned to maintenance.
  • Assist in exhibit repair and construction, to include spot painting.
  • Report and prepare needed supply lists and reviewing with the Foreman; conduct inventory counts as needed.
  • As requested, prepare quotes on maintenance and equipment repair.
  • As assigned, prepare and submit work orders.
  • Follow all safety procedures that pertain to the duties performed. Support all aspects of the Peoria Park District safety program.
  • Wear proper designated uniform during regular zoo hours.
  • Perform other duties as assigned:
    • which are reasonably related to the duties described; or
    • which need to be performed promptly to avoid safety hazards or to protect Park District property; or
    • which are not generally described in other job descriptions; or
    • when the amount of work exceeds the availability of Park District employees within the appropriate job classification.

Essential Functions: The work requires some physical exertion in handling supplies, equipment and materials. Prolonged standing, bending and stooping, and ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds is required on a periodic basis. The programmed activities involve everyday risk, which require normal safety precautions typical of the recreation industry.

Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.

Experience: Background and some work experience in custodial building maintenance. Familiarity with grounds keeping and equipment.

Knowledge and Ability:

  • Understanding of grounds keeping and maintenance of landscaped areas.
  • Knowledge of approved and current practices used in the maintenance of buildings.
  • Working knowledge in the following fields: electrical, plumbing, painting, carpentry, heating, boiler and air handlers and their controls, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety factors as they pertain to a zoo facility.
  • Ability to follow written and oral reports.
  • Ability to be professional, respectful, accountable, innovative, to follow safety procedures, and be equitable to both internal and external customers.
  • Requires Class "D" driver's license.
  • This position is represented by AFSCME Council 31, local no. 3774.
