Job Description Summary

Ensures public safety through the enforcement of animal welfare and control codes and ordinances; enforcement of local, state, and federal animal cruelty laws; and conducting of animal bite, cruelty and neglect investigations as required.

High school diploma or GED required. Two years experience in animal control, or the equivalent experience or education in law enforcement, investigation, or military service and progressively responsible related experience in the field of animal care.

Incumbent is expected to successfully complete various training courses, such as chemical capture, chameleon software, humane investigator, qualify in the use of firearms, and others as determined by the Department. Must be able to detect symptoms of rabies, animals in distress/danger, and other illnesses. Must be knowledgeable and experienced in the safe humane capture, restraint, transfer and confinement of a variety of animals in addition to understanding physical and personality characteristics of differing species of animals as well as different breeds.

Must have a valid Illinois drivers license. Must receive a pre-exposure rabies vaccination. Must be familiar with the following equipment and materials: control stick, live capture traps, cat graspers, squeeze cages, snake snares, and other commonly known animal capture equipment, types of tranquilizer drugs and dosages and gun, communications equipment and computer.

Must be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Must be able to use independent judgment, work with little supervision and maintain confidentiality. Must have strong public relations/communication skills are necessary to work with various individuals encountered and the various situations which may arise, some of which may be potentially threatening. Considerable knowledge of the streets and physical layout of the county and city. Must be able to work in or around dangerous, unpleasant and offensive environments. Must be able to respond calmly during emergencies.
