Director, Regulatory Affairs – FERC Gas Matters
Job Description:
NRG is seeking a dynamic, seasoned professional to join its Regulatory Affairs Team. The Director, FERC Gas Matters is responsible for managing NRG/Direct Energy’s gas regulatory affairs at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (“FERC”). This position monitors, analyzes, and guides responses to interstate pipeline filings and generic wholesale gas regulatory issues. The Director, FERC Gas Matters, communicates gas regulatory issues that impact NRG/Direct Energy’s rates and operations to key gas operations personnel and outside counsel as necessary, and represents NRG/Direct Energy at the FERC. This position monitors approximately 60 pipelines of interest to NRG/Direct Energy. This position also requires a thorough understanding of the FERC’s Capacity Release Regulations. Based in Princeton, NJ, the Director, FERC Gas Matters, is a member of NRG’s Regulatory Affairs team and reports to the Vice President of Regulatory Affairs.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Understand NRG/Direct Energy’s business, strategy and goals by initiating and cultivating collaborative working relationships with internal stakeholders.

Focus on proactive external outreach and relationship building with other similarly interested stakeholders, such as the Indicated Shippers groups’ members to promote NRG/Direct Energy’s gas business priorities.

Review all proposed purchase or sales deals involving gas capacity (transportation & storage) and the related transaction confirmations and/or Asset Management Agreements (“AMA”) structures to ensure FERC-compliance.

In partnership with the appropriate business and/or corporate functions, develop and persuasively advocate company positions to regulatory agencies, policymakers, and key stakeholders in support of the Company’s business goals.

Coordinate with the Company’s retail regulatory personnel to alert the business to emerging issues and develop/deploy appropriate regulatory responses.

Manage outside counsel and consultants.

Provide regulatory guidance to the business on existing as well as new regulations as needed.

Attend and represent the Company at regulatory conferences.

Collaborate with and support NRG Government Affairs with federal and state legislative and Administration matters as needed.

Identify new opportunities to enhance and expand competitive markets.

Interface with regulated utilities in support of business operations.

Manage relationships with key energy industry trade associations.

Other duties as assigned.
Education: A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required in a field related to regulatory affairs, public affairs, law, business or communications.
Experience: At least 5 years of experience is required monitoring, developing, and coordinating regulatory strategy. FERC regulatory experience preferred.

Travel approximately 10%-20% of the time as required.
