Responsibilities
- Clinical Excellence* Performs procedures in a manner that ensures an accurate and complete examination within the guidelines, policies, procedures and standards of Medical Imaging to assigned patients of all ages and is expected to be the expert in the nursing processes of the Diagnostic and Treatment Services.* Practices nursing within the scope of Illinois Registered Professional Nurse licensure* Oversees and performs thorough and accurate patient assessments to evaluate patient status, analyzes finding and reports significant observations appropriately, enhances family communication* Assumes responsibility for assuring efficient, thorough, and effective interventional case flow in the Medical Imaging Department* Administers medications/conscious sedation safely and effectively following UPH and department policies* Controls narcotics and supplies utilizing appropriate documentation* Monitors patient condition and initiate appropriate interventions as needed* Follows and oversees Joint Commission patient safety goals as well as quality throughout procedures* Demonstrates competency in caring for critically ill patients functioning independently and competently in emergency situations* Set up and uses monitoring equipment including capnography, cardiac output, arterial pressures during procedures* Performs venipuncture and insertion of peripheral catheters* Performs adult and pediatric catheterization as needed* Perform nursing tasks in the Radiology Department, IR, and nursing floors* Performs daily inspections such as refrigerator temperature, crash cart, defibrillator, blood oximeter, narcotics log as appropriate* Functions as circulating tech* Functions as scrub assistant during procedures* Educate as necessary and maintain knowledge of moderate sedation guidelines* Assists in scheduling of interventional cases between IR, CT, General Diagnostic, and Sono* Coordinates daily flow of interventional cases between IR, CT, General Diagnostic, and Sono* Coordinates RN resources to holding room, CT, IR, MRI, General Diagnostic, Sono and Nuclear Medicine as dictated by case load.
- Patient Education* Provides proper explanation of procedures to patients, their families, and others as needed to ensure understanding of procedure.* Assesses and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient's/family's age specific needs.* Adapts teaching strategies based on patient's response, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.* Takes cultural, age-specific, gender, and developmental factors into consideration when teaching patients about procedures, illness, hospital experience, etc.* Ensures patient safety in the hospital environment by following policy/procedures and adhering to National Patient Safety Goals.* Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education.* Utilizes SVI patient education system as a resource for patients and family members.
