The major functions of this position is:

Provide authentic Maui Jim Prescription Sunglasses to optical retailers and provide outstanding customer service and support throughout the world. To lead and direct the work flow in the Surface department at the direction of the shift supervisor.


Hourly Rate of Pay: $18.00

Shift Differential: $2.00/Hr.

3rd Shift: (Sunday through Thursday) 10:30 PM - 7:00 AM

Essential Duties:

  • Monitor the workflow through the Surface department. Follow all written procedures to insure proper operation of equipment.

  • Surface lenses utilizing the proper lab equipment.

  • Proactively communicate any issues relating to production or personnel to the Supervisor.

  • Train employees on surface processes and procedures. Responsible for maintaining the training of Lab personnel based on written procedures.

  • Ensure team members are meeting company and department expectations by providing them with daily feedback, as well as discussing production reports with them.

  • Communicate and escalate any issues requiring the direction of the Supervisor i.e. behavior or production issues, employee relations issues, etc.

  • Perform all duties within the Surface Department as needed to ensure the continual flow of production.

  • Serve as the “go-to” person for Surface Dept inquiries.

  • Consult with the Equipment Engineer on equipment issues.

  • Monitor the cleanliness of the department through the use of production personnel.

  • Maintain constant communication with all personnel to ensure policies and procedures are constant with all shifts.

  • Troubleshoot and identify corrective action for delays with workflow including spoilage.

  • Multi-task to maintain an efficient flow of production and breakage.

  • Work between all Rx departments to accomplish our mutual goal of 1) High Quality 2) Customer Satisfaction 3) High Production 4) Low Spoilage. Troubleshoot production delays.

  • Troubleshoot production delays. Monitor supply usage and waste. Multitask to maintain efficient flow of production and breakage.

  • Assist Customer Service in locating, tracking, and expediting Rx orders through the surface department.

  • Provide back-up to the shift supervisor in his/her absence.

  • Perform all other duties as outlined and directed by the Lab Manager/supervisor on a day-to-day basis.

Special Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate with small groups.

  • Ability to use a PC terminal.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Ability to read equipment maintenance and operating manuals.

Desired Qualifications:

As a guide, indicated below is the preferred education and experience for this position:

  • Two to four years optical lab experience in a manufacturing capacity.

Listed below are the particular skills preferred for this position:

  • Ability to lead a team.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

  • Very strong optical knowledge.

  • Dependable, responsible, high integrity.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must display courtesy and tact in handling employees.

  • Must demonstrate good teaching and mentoring/coaching skills.

  • Must demonstrate good problem solving skills.

  • Must have the ability to work in an organized fashion and meet deadlines. Good planning/scheduling/coordinating skills necessary.

  • Microcomputer experience.

  • Ability to identify cost savings opportunities.
