Position: Blacksmith Lead-I
Schedule: Monday–Friday
Compensation: DOE $35-$39/ hour

Overview of Role:

The Blacksmith I - Lead will oversee and participate in the creation, shaping, and finishing of metal objects using traditional blacksmithing tools and techniques, and will also inspect and repair these items. This position will involve working with junior blacksmiths to train them in forging, welding, and metalworking skills. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic and demonstrate attention to detail while following safety protocols in a dynamic, hands-on environment. The Lead will work closely with facility management to ensure the facility remains operational, cost-effective, and compliant with safety standards.

Key Deliverables

  • Supervise and lead a team of Blacksmith technicians, providing guidance, training, and support.
  • Forging, shaping, and finishing various metal products, including tools, custom metal items, and hardware.
  • Prepare work areas by setting up tools, materials, and equipment for each task.
  • Operate anvils, hammers, and other blacksmithing tools to shape metal products.
  • Welding, soldering, and metal joining tasks as needed.
  • Follow safety protocols and always ensure the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Perform basic maintenance and cleaning of blacksmithing tools and equipment.
  • Measure, cut, and trim metal pieces to specifications.
  • Troubleshooting minor issues and adjusting during the forging process.
  • Work with the team to ensure that quality and production standards are met.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace, including proper disposal of waste materials.
  • Follow instructions supervisors provide to enhance skills and improve craftsmanship.
Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least three years of experience in metalworking, welding, or a related field, with a proven track record of leadership and supervisory experience
  • Coursework in metalworking, welding, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with basic hand tools and machinery (e.g., hammers, drills, grinders).
  • Basic knowledge of safety practices in a workshop or industrial environment.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy materials (up to 50 pounds) and stand for extended periods.
  • Eagerness to learn and grow in the blacksmithing trade.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate with all levels of the organization.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in blacksmithing or metalworking (internships, apprenticeships, or personal projects).
  • Understanding of welding techniques (e.g., MIG, TIG, stick).
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing or crafting environment.
  • Willingness to pursue further education or certification in blacksmith or related fields.

Technology Requirements:

  • Proficiency with maintenance management software (e.g., CMMS) for work orders, reporting, and scheduling.
  • Understanding of workshop tools (e.g., anvils, grinders, welding machines).
  • Familiarity with basic power and hand tools.
  • Ability to use measurement tools (e.g., calipers, tape measures) to ensure accuracy in metalworking.
