Job Summary
The Underwriter Trainee underwrites individual disability income insurance applications, within guidelines set for the issuance of policies on a standard or substandard basis. The Underwriter Trainee works very closely with the Underwriting management, supervisor and/or higher-level underwriters who initially reviews all Underwriter Trainee work.
Primary Responsibilities
- Facilitate the sales process while underwriting application files by ensuring reasonable and timely underwriting decisions within established service level objectives.
- As directed, may have contact with the field force to gather information on which to base decisions.
- May be granted authority to approve applications up to specific standards (or better) and substandard limits.
- Submits for review by superiors those applications requiring higher ratings or amounts in excess of prescribed limits.
- Learn about the Disability insurance industry, the Company, its products, services, underwriting and the position.
- Timely, consistent and progressive assimilation of the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve a level of self-sufficiency warranting promotion to the position of Underwriter.
- Comply with applicable rules procedures, regulations and laws
- Attend meetings and complete specific underwriting related projects as directed
Anticipated Salary: $51,600 - $53,600

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required – preferably in Insurance, Risk Management, Accounting, Finance or similar discipline
- Strong service-oriented work ethic to understand, anticipate and satisfy customer business needs
- Excellent communication (written and verbal), analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
- Goal oriented, results driven, accountable and reliable
- Demonstrate integrity, a positive attitude, sound judgment and attention to detail

- Basic computer skills to include proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Bilingual proficiency a plus
