Summary: The Math, Science, and Engineering Laboratory Assistant is primarily responsible for performing general laboratory duties including preparing materials for laboratory courses, completing requests in the inventory system, and any other assistance needed by the Laboratory Coordinator, and for performing general administrative duties including answering phones and greeting visitors and maintaining supplies and organization in office spaces.
The compensation for the PT Lab Assistant is $16.24-$18.67/hour.
Essential Functions:

Answering phones and greeting visitors in department office when needed.
Maintaining supplies and organization in department office, copy rooms, and storage spaces on two campuses.
Preparing materials for laboratory courses as requested by instructors on two campuses.
Coordinating and ensuring compliance with laboratory safety standards across lab, prep, and storage spaces.
Checking and completing requests that will be posted in ordering / inventory software.
Cleaning and maintaining equipment.
In communication with relevant users, organizing and categorizing equipment within storage spaces to maximize accessibility and efficiency, ensuring that all items are easily retrievable and systematically arranged.
Assisting the Laboratory Coordinator in conducting regular assessments of stored equipment to identify unused or surplus items and making informed decisions on removing unused items.
Assisting the Laboratory Coordinator in microbiological media preparations and inoculations.
Maintaining accurate records of inventory changes, including items added, removed, or repurposed.
Managing inventory, updating ordering / inventory system inventory records, invoice, requisition, purchase order, and tracking information.
Assisting in setting up and or tearing down labs as requested by instructors.
Training, working with, and monitoring student laboratory assistants.

Monitoring and / or assisting student workers in the following:
Conducting chemical water analysis assays.
Cleaning glassware and equipment in all of the laboratories.
Storing and handling all chemicals and media in an appropriate manner.
Keeping push carts clean and available for use.
Cleaning laboratory tables and side counters in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics as needed.
Keeping all water carboys in the chemistry laboratories filled with distilled water.
Stocking laboratories with paper towels once a week.
Assisting the Laboratory Coordinator in caring for any laboratory animals.
Performing other duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite.
Strong verbal & communication skills.
High level of comfort in answering phone calls and in-person queries.
Strong attention-to-detail skills.
Must be willing to work at East Peoria & Peoria Campuses.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous office experience.
Previous lab experience.
