As a Principal Designer for the Enterprise Design System, you will be responsible for the vision, leadership, and continuous advancement of our design system at Humana. You will play a pivotal role in bridging design and engineering, especially as generative AI reshapes how teams collaborate and deliver digital experiences. You will champion technical rigor, seamless designer-engineer workflows, and elevate the design system’s contribution to both usability and delivery velocity throughout the enterprise.Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Strategy
Own and evolve the design system’s architecture, ensuring it scales with business needs and technical advancements including generative AI workflows
Define and advocate for best practices in collaboration between designers and engineers as roles and responsibilities converge
Guide the transformation of the design system into a technically robust platform, including full documentation, well-structured APIs, and deep integration with front-end engineering
Define and track success metrics for the design system, including adoption, usability, and impact on delivery velocity and experience consistency
Design and Technical Excellence
Set standards for quality, performance, accessibility, and consistency for the components, tools, and APIs in the system
Oversee comprehensive documentation efforts that serve users at multiple technical levels, surpassing traditional design system documentation depth
Evaluate and drive the adoption of modern design tools, code workflows, and AI-enabled platforms to support seamless multi-disciplinary teams
Collaborate actively with Platform Engineering, Product Management, and other stakeholders to ensure the design system aligns with enterprise needs
Community and Enablement
Foster a culture of curiosity, experimentation, and learning across the organization
Mentor and empower designers and engineers, helping teams adopt new technologies and workflows
Build internal community engagement and knowledge sharing
Operations and Governance
Establish contribution and governance models and processes for ongoing maintenance and evolution of the system
Ensure cross-functional adoption through clear communication, enablement, and support structures
Use your skills to make an impact
Required Qualifications:
8+ years in digital product design, front-end engineering, or design systems leadership
Demonstrated expertise in managing enterprise-scale design systems with deep integration to engineering platforms
Proficiency in front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and frameworks (React, Angular)
Proven track record in bridging design and code, including fluency with Figma, GitHub, Storybook, API documentation, and/or similar tools
Advanced understanding of emerging design technologies, including generative AI and code-heavy designer workflows
Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to produce and review highly technical documentation
Experience with agile, iterative development and change management in large organizations
Prior experience working within Platform Engineering or collaborating with engineering leadership
Work-At-Home Information
To ensure Home or Hybrid Home/Office employees’ ability to work effectively, the self-provided internet service of Home or Hybrid Home/Office employees must meet the following criteria:
At minimum, a download speed of 25 Mbps and an upload speed of 10 Mbps is required; wireless, wired cable or DSL connection is suggested.
Satellite, cellular and microwave connection can be used only if approved by leadership.
Employees who live and work from Home in the state of California, Illinois, Montana, or South Dakota will be provided a bi-weekly payment for their internet expense.
Humana will provide Home or Hybrid Home/Office employees with telephone equipment appropriate to meet the business requirements for their position/job.
Work from a dedicated space lacking ongoing interruptions to protect member PHI / HIPAA information.

The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.
