The primary purpose of this role is to assist the Mapleton site to achieve and maintain compliance in Environmental, Safety, and Health aspects of the facility and continuous improvement of environmental, health, and safety standards in compliance with Evonik and local regulations. Strategically develop plans to provide improvements in the Environmental, Health, and Safety performance of the site. Provide safety compliance support to the NA CS sites by designing, evaluating and updating site safety programs and meeting all documentation and reporting requirements for authority compliance, corporate policy and plant goals. Coordinate site safety projects including oversight of scope development, bid evaluation, and supervision of field work. The position is part of the Mapleton ESH group ensuring site wide implementation of ESH programs and Evonik and ESH regulatory compliance.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Program Management - Support the Mapleton site by implementation of ESH programs and environmental compliance by:
    • Communicating with internal and external experts regarding compliance topics.
    • Prepare for, participate in, and assist with correcting findings from corporate and government audits/inspections.
    • Performs inspections and tests planned to monitor specific EHS issues, regulations, and company practices.
    • Assists in training employees on EHS guidelines, company policies and procedures, and regulations.
    • pertaining to EHS.
    • Making and maintaining necessary EHS records according to established guidelines.
    • Contributes to the development of EHS policies and procedures.
    • Ability to obtain a Class K Industrial Wastewater Operator Certification
    • Ability to be certified drinking water operator for a non-community potable water system.
    • Be responsible for the day-to day operation and management of the potable water system and wastewater system.
    • Complete routing trench inspections and report non-conformance to maintenance and EHS.
  • Provide leadership for environmental/compliance related projects and safety initiatives toward continuous improvement:
    • Assist with activities involved in the sites ESH compliance requirements.
    • Provide support for the health and safety programs such as incident investigation, root cause analysis, industrial hygiene program, routine audits and field inspections.
    • Demonstrated leadership that requires organizing or working with groups
    • Experience in project work
    • Relevant internship or work experience in functional field
    • Ability to work independently at times
    • Excellent written and verbal communications skills; PowerPoint, Word and Excel skills well-developed
    • Ability to effectively articulate and summarize analytical data for leadership
    • Performing contractor inspections, auditing permits, participating in incident investigations, and participating in JSA Reviews.
    • Provide training and evaluation for employees for compliance related activities.
    • Conduct ESH program reviews.
  • Support sites in investigating incidents by:
    • Having detailed knowledge of relevant Root Cause Analysis (RCA) tools like Cause Mapping, 5Why, Human Factors Analysis (HFAT), etc.
    • Initiating, leading, and facilitating sessions to apply these tools.
    • Presenting results comprehensibly to relevant audience.
    • Being a subject matter expert for ESTER and administering it.
    • Reporting relevant KPIs for ESTER modules.
  • Implement applicable compliance regulations and Evonik ESH rules, requirements, and Safety Culture Framework by:
    • Supporting, developing and conducting ESH related training.
    • Identifying and assessing workplace hazards, providing timely input in risk analysis, and recommend provision to reduce the risks or hazards.
    • Developing and reviewing ESH procedures and performing required compliance audits.

REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering or Safety related field or equivalent experience.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in safety, production OR engineering in a chemical manufacturing facility.

Skills:

  • Good knowledge of chemical plant and/or process as well as ESH compliance programs
  • Detailed knowledge about processes to identify, assess and manage risks and hazards (HAZOP, LOPA, MOC, PSSR, PHA, etc.)
  • High degree of interpersonal and team working skills
  • Good communication and presentation skills
  • A good degree of technical competence to present the facts and implement the necessary steps towards ensuring environmental compliance.
  • Innovative thinking
  • Knowledge of Root Cause Analysis (RCA) tools including but not limited to, 5Why, Human Factor Analysis (HFAT), Human Error Failure Analysis
  • Knowledge about process safety management programs and details for implementation
  • General knowledge of ESH management system e.g. risk management, permit to work, LOTO, CSE, and other ESH compliance regulations, etc.
