DEPARTMENT:           PUBLIC WORKS / STREETS & SEWERS DIVISION

 LOCATION:                 3505 DRIES LANE, PEORIA, ILLINOIS

 HOURS:                       7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. – Monday through Friday (May be required to work 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shifts and 12 to 16 hours during emergency conditions)

This is manual labor work requiring considerable physical strength and endurance.

Examples of Duties
¨       Learn to operate trucks in excess of 26,001 GVW hauling materials and doing snow and ice control by completion of probationary period.
¨       Learn to operate street sweeper, street flusher and endloader during course of probationary period.
¨       Learn to operate rollers, graders, backhoes and other heavy equipment maintaining streets, alleys and sewers during course of employment.
¨       Performs pavement repair work; rakes asphalt; builds forms for concrete pavement and structures; mixes, pours, and finishes concrete; lays replacement brick.
¨       Drives a small truck for transportation of workers, equipment and materials for the hand-spreading of chemicals or abrasives for snow and ice control; moves furniture and equipment from within the same building or from one City Building to another.
¨       Assists skilled craft workers in performing maintenance on City buildings.
¨       Cleans clogged sewers, catch basins, and inlet drainage structures.
¨       Operates air-hammers, cutting torches and other equipment and tools common to maintenance and repair work.
¨       Assists in receiving large bulk items.
 
       IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS
¨       Performs any and all duties specified in any work agreement.
¨       May operate an aerial truck or pavement grinder.
¨       May guide or lead unskilled or semi-skilled workers.
Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED and a CDL Class “B” with non-restrictive air brakes required. Ability to read and write and some experience in semi-skilled construction work.  Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job considered.

IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTES: Knowledge of common practices, methods and materials used in maintenance and construction work. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods; use hand and mechanical tools and equipment, such as jackhammers and concrete saws, and to develop skill in operation to which assigned; coordinate hand and eye movements to complete assignments/projects; establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other City employees; understand and follow oral and written instructions; operate trucks requiring CDL licensing; operate/learn to operate heavy equipment in the maintenance of streets, alleys, and sewers; standard practices, tools and equipment of the painting trade; equipment, methods and techniques of painting highways, streets, traffic markings and signals; and occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in traffic painting. Ability to use sound judgement in estimating time, materials, viscosity, and traffic conditions; to interpret blueprints and layouts; to properly and safely mix highly toxic chemical thinners; to perform duties under hazardous conditions in heavy traffic; to supervise semi-skilled and unskilled workers; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other City employees. Skill in the preparation, use, cleaning and maintaining machines and equipment.
