The City of Pekin is now accepting Firefighter applications.

All testing requirements and instructions are included in the Pekin Fire Department Application Packet.

The Fire and Police Commission of the City of Pekin will conduct testing on October 31, 2026 to establish an Original Appointment List for the Pekin Fire Department. The testing process includes:

• Written Examination
• Aerial Ladder Climb
• Oral Interview

The Firefighter is an entry-level position within the Pekin Fire Department with duties encompassing firefighting, hazardous materials response, rescue, emergency medical services, and public engagement.

Training Requirement: Successful candidates are required to complete basic firefighter training through a State of Illinois approved Fire Academy and become a licensed Paramedic as a mandatory requirement of employment.

Testing: Applicants must complete the testing process as outlined by the Fire and Police Commission of the City of Pekin. All testing requirements are included in the Pekin Fire Department Application Packet.

Minimum Requirements: High School diploma or equivalent; Valid driver’s license; Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) card obtained no earlier than October 31, 2025 (one year prior to the test). Click here to access CPAT resources and information.

Applicants must be a citizen of the United States, must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire, and must be under age 35 by the test date of October 31, 2026, unless they have prior documented experience as a Firefighter for a bona fide Fire Department, or have turned 35 while serving in a military position and are not older than age 40. (65 ILCS 5/10-1-7.1(c))
