Role Summary:

Caterpillar is building advanced automation and autonomy solutions that help customers improve jobsite safety, productivity, and efficiency. We are seeking a Senior Autonomy Engineering Specialist to serve as our construction site operations expert across all Construction industry domains.

In this role, you will be own ensuring that what we develop truly meets customer needs by bringing deep understanding of customer workflows, pain points, and operational realities. This role will be engineering expert in construction customer operations and able to drive solutions that support normal operations and edge cases.

This role will help the team understand how to convert customer workflows and needs into capability requirements, acceptance criteria and validation scenarios leveraging new technologies and approaches to improve solution capabilities and customer outcomes.


What you will do:

  • Become the go-to expert on construction jobsite operations across multiple domains (e.g., waste, road construction, quarry) and represent real-world workflows in product discussions.
  • Build clear workflow models (personas, use cases, operating constraints, edge cases) to ensure solutions align with how customers work.
  • Provide domain leadership to ensure Task Autonomy capabilities reflect real construction production workflows and decision points, including the situations and constraints customers face during execution.
  • Translate workflow needs into clear requirements and guidance so engineering teams build the right capabilities and customer experience.
  • Define and communicate customer needs and convert them into actionable product inputs, partnering across teams through design, implementation, testing, and release.
  • Consult on integration issues where autonomy solutions interact with other systems and infrastructure components, ensuring end-to-end usability and operational fit.
  • Participate in test review and analysis, helping ensure validation coverage reflects customer-critical workflows and scenarios.
  • Apply new technologies and approaches that improve solution capability and customer value.
  • Explain complex technical and operational concepts clearly to different audiences using summarization and simplification techniques.
  • Influence decisions through expertise, evidence, and credibility in a collaborative, matrixed environment.

What you will have:

  • Communicating Complex Concepts: Knowledge of effective presentation tools and techniques to ensure clear understanding; ability to use summarization and simplification techniques to explain complex technical concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience.
  • Technical Excellence: Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.
  • Managing Multiple Priorities: Knowledge of effective self-management practices; ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation.
  • Strategic Thinking: Knowledge of the importance of "big picture" thinking and planning; ability to apply organizational acumen and competitiveness to identify and maintain focus on key success factors for the organization.
  • Software Product Design/Architecture: Knowledge of software product design; ability to convert market requirements into the software product design.

Top candidates will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.
  • Strong experience with construction site operations and jobsite workflows (waste, road construction, quarry, or similar).
  • Experience translating customer workflows into requirements, acceptance criteria, and validation scenarios.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through influence and partner effectively across engineering, product, and stakeholder teams.

Additional Details:

  • This position requires the candidate to be based in either Mossville, IL ; Tucson, AZ or Dallas, TX
  • Domestic relocation assistance is available for this position.

Summary Pay Range:

$147,760.00 - $240,110.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.

This position requires working onsite five days a week.
