The Energy Specialist is a key contributor to the development and execution of global energy procurement strategies and solutions. This role supports the design, deployment, and continuous improvement of procurement capabilities that drive operational efficiency, cost savings, and sustainability. The ideal candidate brings a strong understanding of energy markets, data analytics, and process optimization, and is capable of leading cross-functional initiatives that align with business goals.

This position is recognized within the Division as a leader in energy management with superior knowledge and experience. The incumbents are responsible for applying their technical knowledge and experience to drive communication, collaboration, problem solving and execution among a community of technical experts from inside and outside the company.

At this level individuals are expected to develop awareness of commercial aspects of procurement to help make strategic sourcing recommendations in support of the cost, quality and velocity objectives of the commodity. Developing skills to build long-term external relationships with suppliers as well as internal relationships with business unit customers are also expected. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for this job function.

A major function of this position includes adoption of new supplier capabilities and industry technologies to lower cost and improve the quality and reliability of energy supplies to Caterpillar facilities. In addition, this position requires the capability understanding of supplier development, supplier performance management, global leverage through category energy strategy management and enterprise supply network optimization.

Individuals at this level are expected to operate in cross-functional teams with minimum supervision to sell and implement such ideas. Additionally, this position provides subject matter expert consulting to Caterpillar Governmental Affairs, Environmental Health & Safety, Sustainable Development and Electric Power Division personnel.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead and manage projects focused on lean procurement processes, energy market analysis, and system/tool implementation.
  • Collaborate with senior stakeholders and business users to gather Voice of Business (VOB) and Voice of Customer (VOC), define business requirements, and develop implementation plans.
  • Design and deploy scalable energy procurement solutions that are globally applicable and locally effective.
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives by developing standardized best practices, service offerings, and training materials.
  • Serve as the lead technical representative in energy procurement, presenting recommendations to senior leadership and engaging with enterprise-wide stakeholders.
  • Monitor procurement performance and identify opportunities for cost savings, efficiency improvements, and sustainability enhancements.
  • Evaluate and promote new processes, technologies to reduce cost, techniques, and procedures to reduce cost and improve quality and reliability of energy supplies.
  • Be the subject matter expert in energy supply markets, energy demand management and energy asset management.

What You Have:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Energy Management, Environmental Science, Supply Chain, or a related field.
  • Business Process Improvement: Identifies and implements more efficient approaches to energy procurement and operational workflows.
  • Data Analytics: Analyzes energy usage and market data to support strategic decision-making and performance tracking.
  • Effective Communication: Clearly conveys technical and strategic information to stakeholders at all levels.
  • Negotiation: Builds collaborative relationships with vendors and internal teams to achieve win-win outcomes.
  • Matrix Management: Navigates complex organizational structures to align energy strategies across departments.
  • Cost-Benefit Analysis: Evaluates procurement options using financial metrics such as ROI and NPV to support investment decisions.
  • Category Management: Applies category management principles to optimize energy sourcing and supplier performance.
  • Procurement Function: Executes procurement tasks in alignment with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and strategic goals.

What Will Set You Apart:

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA), Energy Management or Environmental Policy, Data Analytics, Industrial Engineering, Operations Management or related to the field.
  • Certified in Energy Manager
  • Certified in Six Sigma Green/Black Belt
  • Expert in energy procurement, strategic sourcing, or sustainability programs.
  • Proficiency in data analytics tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI, Tableau), ERP systems, and energy market platforms.
  • Expert in global energy markets and regulatory environments
  • Familiarity with renewable energy sources and carbon reduction strategies
  • Expert working in matrixed organizations and cross-functional teams
  • Fluent English

Summary Pay Range:

$128,470.00 - $192,710.00
