This position in the Corporate and Commercial Legal Team will have the opportunity to lead a team of paralegals to support attorneys and manage key processes in addition to a paralegal workload. This position works under the general supervision of an Assistant General Counsel to support the efforts of the division.

What You Will Do:

The incumbent is expected to have extensive knowledge of the core subject area of which they will supervise (i.e. corporate and commercial). In addition to a commercial paralegal workload, reporting directly to this position is a team of paralegals. This position serves as a leader among paralegals more broadly within the Caterpillar Paralegal Team.

In addition to the substantive job duties held by the Paralegal Manager, additional supervisory responsibilities will include:

  • Supervision of three to seven paralegals in a specific subject matter area
  • Implementation, management and continuous improvement of key legal/business processes. Works with Department management and internal and external contacts to ensure the proper workings of its administrative functions
  • The position is responsible for all personnel issues and performance evaluation of subordinates (training, development, mentoring, coaching, hiring, onboarding, etc.)
  • Monitoring levels of administrative support for paralegals and reviews paralegal utilization to ensure they receive salary grade appropriate work assignments
  • Acting as a resource for all paralegals who wish to discuss issues relating to their career path, promotion, performance, training, or other work-related concerns. This role will also participate in the succession planning process for LSPP paralegals
  • Defining business goals and objectives and developing metrics that will measure the degree to which goals and objectives are being met
  • Acting as an advisor or consultant to senior management regarding legal business processes and related systems
  • May also assist with and/or manage budget

What You Have:

  • Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors
  • Managing Multiple Priorities: Knowledge of effective self-management practices; ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation
  • Professionalism and Discretion: Demonstrated ability to consistently exhibit professionalism, sound judgment, and discretion in handling sensitive legal matters and confidential information (including personnel and HR issues). Proven track record of maintaining high ethical standards and fostering trust within legal and business environments
  • Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations
  • Delegation: Knowledge of the need to delegate tasks to others effectively; ability to motivate associates to take over tasks and responsibilities to accomplish results for which the manager maintains ultimate accountability
  • Team Management: Knowledge of effective team building techniques; ability to form and manage effective teams
  • Document Management: Knowledge of document management; ability to categorize, integrate, update, document and distribute business information in a secure, effective way
  • Legal Analysis: Knowledge of methods and tools used in legal analysis; ability to read, interpret and draw accurate conclusions from both legal and factual information

Education: Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent experience

Summary Pay Range:

$126,000.00 - $189,000.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
