Role Definition
Caterpillar’s Large Power Systems - Drivetrain Division (IDT) designs and manufactures mechanical and electric drivetrain components and systems used across the full Cat machine product line. As a Design Engineer, the candidate will lead specific projects for drivetrain product maintenance engineering/factory support for the gears manufactured in various facilities worldwide. Other key responsibilities include supplier component sourcing/assurance of supply, supplier/assembly quality and cost reduction activities. Lastly, the role will support the development of continuous product improvement solutions and new product introduction for gears within drivetrain.
What you will do
Design responsibility for Upper & Lower Powertrain Gears
Support Continuous Product Improvement (CPI) and New Product Introduction (NPI) projects
Prioritize and complete detailed design activities
Collaborate with analysis and development teams to validate designs
Support creation and execution of technical plans to meet project deliverables
Collaborate with suppliers and purchasing for component development.
Perform product maintenance including factory support, sourcing projects and cost reduction initiatives
Communicate effectively with coworkers, management and business partners
Degree Requirement
Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering curriculum
Skills you must have
Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.
Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
Managing Multiple Priorities: Knowledge of effective self-management practices; ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation.
Technical Excellence: Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.
Computer-Aided Design & Engineering: Knowledge of tools and techniques of specialized graphics programs; ability to produce, analyze, simulate and test product design drafts.
Product Design - MFG: Knowledge of processes, approaches, tools and techniques of product design; ability to convert customer and market requirements into product design.
Product Design and Development: Knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production.
Top Candidates will also have
Minimum 6 years of professional level experience.
Master’s degree in an accredited Engineering curriculum
Previous role as a hardware design engineer
Gear manufacturing experience
Bevel Gear design and/or manufacturing experience
Material and/or Heat Treat related experience
Powertrain design, development, or product support experience
Proficient in Creo modeling (or similar solid modeling product)
Supplier collaboration
NPI and CPI experience
FMEA based validation process knowledge
Must possess strong collaborative & interpersonal skills and ability to work within a global network of process partners

This position will close 9/9/2025 at 11:59 pm.
The location for this position is East Peoria, IL (Building KK) and requires the employee to work a 5-day-a-week schedule onsite.
Relocation (domestic) assistance is available.

Summary Pay Range:
$95,640.00 - $143,520.00Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
