Role Definition

Caterpillar’s LPSD Medium Vee Engine Platform team is seeking an Engineering Project Team Leader to successfully lead Marine engine platform programs. This role requires delivering NTI, NPI, NSI and maintenance projects within budget while meeting critical business and customer requirements. Project team leaders serve as the primary representatives for the engine platform team during meetings with various management levels and customers. They must cultivate strong networks to secure the necessary resources and cooperation necessary to overcome obstacles and ensure project success.

What you will do

  • The team leader role accounts for the majority of this assignment, while the remainder of the time, the incumbent acts as an individual contributor, bringing technical expertise to the project as well. Team leaders must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience, new business knowledge and skill. Strong program/project management and strong organizational skills are critical.

  • Significant challenges of this position are working with people: enhancing the team’s creativity; facilitating the team’s cooperation; clearly communicating the requirements and tasks, while gaining input from the team on refinement of same; translating both verbal and non-verbal information from the customer, management, and team members.

  • Project team leaders are the spokesperson for the platform team in meetings with multiple levels of management and with the customer. A team leader must develop good networks to enable them to obtain resources and cooperation needed and remove roadblocks so that they can ensure the success of their team. Project team leaders may be called upon to give input to performance reviews for other team members. Ever increasing skills in the role-based competencies of Managing Vision & Purpose, Decision Quality, and Negotiating are required.

  • Project scope will require technical focus on engines and will require incumbent to broaden business understanding. Although jobs/projects will have a relatively narrow focus, understanding and defining their benefits to the customer is crucial.

  • Possess the ability to draw upon foundational product development skills such as conceptual design, development of product and/or process, data analysis & extraction, failure resolution & prevention, and requirements management

  • Team leaders will continuously learn through experience, understanding the customers’ needs and the application of the product or process, as well as keeping up with technology. Experience in more than one engineering function is desirable, and experience in more than one business or service unit would be helpful.

  • Expectations demand that jobs/projects be completed on time, independent of the hours required. Acknowledging trade-offs between time, resources and quality and raising the customers’ and management’s awareness of those trade-offs is essential.

Degree Requirement

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline from an accredited curriculum.

Skills you must have

  • Products and Services: Knowledge of major products and services and product and service groups; ability to apply knowledge of product and service appropriately to diverse situations.

  • Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.

  • Technical Excellence: Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.

  • Influencing Through Expertise: Knowledge of effective influencing tactics and strategies; ability to use these to deepen own expertise and impact or challenge decisions within and outside own organization.

  • Project Management: Knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources to achieve project objectives.

  • Team Management: Knowledge of effective team building techniques; ability to form and manage effective teams.

  • Requirements Analysis: Knowledge of tools, methods, and techniques of requirement analysis; ability to elicit, analyze and record required business functionality and non-functionality requirements to ensure the success of a system or software development project.
