The Product Support and Logistics Division (PSLD) is one of the most innovative divisions within Caterpillar. In PSLD, as within all of Caterpillar, our priority is our customers and helping them build a better world. We touch nearly every element of the services value stream from procurement to design and manufacturing to distribution. PSLD is responsible for Aftermarket Parts Distribution of Cat Parts, Integrated Logistics, segment Procurement and the design and manufacture of Wear Components (Undercarriage and GET) and Maintenance Components (Seals, Tubes & Hardware, Hose & Couplings, Fluids and Filters).

As the Automation Controls Engineer, you will be responsible for leading and participating in the design, implementation, and management of the systems that control the operation of automation machinery, processes and systems within the East Peoria, IL facility.

What You Will Do:

  • Leading projects to deploy automated systems; providing subject matter expertise for programming, debugging and troubleshooting robotic and automated systems.
  • Design and development of control systems; including choosing the right components, creating schematics, and programming Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s).
  • Serving as the subject matter expert for automated system applications; maintaining the standards and documentation for automated system applications.
  • Participating in identifying and implementing enhancements and modifications to existing equipment and processes to ensure that the control systems are installed correctly and operate as designed.
  • Providing engineering support and maintenance of the control systems for equipment, processes, or facilities ensuring that they continue to function reliably.
  • Providing technical expertise and guidance in major manufacturing projects, working with internal/external suppliers to support/improve manufacturing productivity and cost effectiveness.
  • Implementing major systems and the coordination of those systems with the total facility.
  • Championing and leading the modernization of existing control systems for assembly, components and logistics manufacturing process through automated process development and improved manufacturing performance.
  • Communicating with suppliers to analyze their current or proposed product/process designs to determine feasibility of using existing designs or modifying the designs to improve process and/or product.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other engineers, technicians, and operators to ensure that control systems meet the needs of the project and the end-users.
  • Improving space utilization in manufacturing spaces.
  • Creating and maintaining value stream maps, SFMEA, PFMEA, Control Plans, and Operational documentation.
  • Developing and implementing processes in line with Caterpillar standard processes.
  • Evaluating projects and prepare feasibility studies to define desired results, assess value proposition and determine project plans.
  • Implementing automated material storage solutions and AGV’s into an existing production environment.
  • Other duties as assigned by Caterpillar management from time-to-time.


What You Have (Basic Qualifications):

  • Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.
  • Vendor/Supplier Management: Knowledge of external provider management processes and ability to effectively manage the business relationship with external providers (e.g., vendors, service providers, contractors, consultants, and suppliers).
  • Knowledge of Robotics: Knowledge of designing, programming, and operating robots for various applications; ability to utilize programming languages and robotics knowledge to automate the necessary operations of the organization.
  • Industrial Automation/Automatic Control: Knowledge of various industrial automatic control systems, processes and methodologies in a manufacturing environment; ability to design, implement and maintain automatic production systems/processes to improve productivity and efficiency, as well as minimize human intervention.
  • Operations Standards, Procedures and Policies: Knowledge of organizational standards, procedures and policies in manufacturing activities; ability to plan, guide, and monitor manufacturing processes for compliance.

What Will Set You Apart (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Manufacturing, or Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Project Administration: Knowledge of project administration best practices and ability to use organizational strategies, practices and tools for administering projects. Past project management experience.
  • Quality Management: Knowledge of quality management methods, tools, and techniques and ability to create and support an environment that meets the quality goals of the organization.
  • Experience integrating robots, such as FANUC, ABB and/or KUKA, into assembly or machine tending-type processes/systems.
  • Certified Robotics in Manufacturing Fundamentals (RMF) through the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).
  • Experience integrating AGV’s, automating material flow/storage.
  • Experience in integrating cobots.
  • Previous experience with SAP, CAD, and the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Previous experience working with control systems, programming (ex., PLC, HMI), electronics, and automation.
  • Previous experience diagnosing and correct issues with control systems.

Summary Pay Range:

$110,520.00 - $165,840.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
