Role Definition: Drivetrain Component Metallurgist

Caterpillar’s Large Power Systems - Drivetrain Division (IDT) designs and manufactures mechanical and electric drivetrain components and systems used across the full Cat machine product line. As a Senior Design Engineering Specialist, the candidate will lead specific projects for drivetrain product maintenance engineering/factory support for the gears manufactured in various facilities worldwide. Other key responsibilities include supplier component sourcing/assurance of supply, supplier/assembly quality and cost reduction activities. Lastly, the role will support the development of continuous product improvement solutions and new product introduction for gears within drivetrain.

Responsibilities

  • This role leads the metallurgic design, development, and production support of gear, shaft and other drivetrain components.

  • This role serves as metallurgical expert for drivetrain components during New Product Introduction programs, Current Product Improvement programs, etc. Responsible for providing metallurgical solutions for shop problems and field failures.

  • This role leads the heat treat processing and development of gear, shaft and other drivetrain components.

  • This role works with our internal and external suppliers on metallurgical processes.

  • This role works with our purchasing partners to select and develop suppliers (steel mills, forgers, etc.).

  • This role is responsible to work with our Advanced Materials Technology team to develop future metallurgical designs and processes, and applications on drivetrain components.

    Degree Requirement

    Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum required. Master's degree desired.

    Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.

    Project Management: Level Expert

    Knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources to achieve project objectives.

    Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Level Expert

    Knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing environment.

    Product Development Life Cycle - MFG: Level Expert

    Knowledge of the methodology and associated phases, activities and deliverables of product development life cycle in manufacturing organizations; ability to bring new or enhanced products to the marketplace.

    Computer-Aided Design & Engineering: Level Extensive Experience

    Knowledge of tools and techniques of specialized graphics programs; ability to produce, analyze, simulate and test product design drafts.

    Product Testing: Level Extensive Experience

    Knowledge of product testing approaches, techniques and tools; ability to design, plan and execute testing strategies and tactics to ensure product quality at all stages of manufacturing.
