Job Summary:

At Caterpillar’s East Peoria, IL facility, we manufacture and assemble Track Type Tractors. In this role as a Facilities Engineering Manager, you will report to the Senior Manager Manufacturing Engineering and will be primarily responsible for supervising maintenance activities and infrastructure at the facility. As a member of the Maintenance Support team, you will need to have a growth mindset, promote continuous improvement, and help build a defect-free culture. What you will do:

  • Ensuring necessary maintenance is provided to keep the facility, machine tools, fleet, and equipment in operating condition. Due to the critical urgency of equipment uptime and the facilities combination of fabrication, large scale machining, painting, assembly, and distribution operations, considerable emphasis is placed on preventive maintenance and expeditious emergency repairs. This position is also the facility emergency response coordinator and cyber security champion.

  • Incumbent supervises a staff of supervisors responsible for maintenance, machine repair, building maintenance, fleet management, maintenance crib/indirect materials, tool room, utilities, machine cleaning and sanitation services. Services performed in these functional areas include: operation of and repair to all electrical, water, compressed air, sewage, air conditioning, heating and ventilating systems; maintenance of boilers, cranes, hoists; repair of roofs, roads and parking lots; automotive repair to fork lifts, scooters and trucks; and cleaning of process systems wash and rinse booths. Establishes maintenance schedules for the above.

  • Works with staff engineers to coordinate the installation of electrical, mechanical, material handling systems and miscellaneous equipment and the rearrangement and modification of the facility. Contacts operating divisions to coordinate and schedule maintenance work to assure a minimum of interruption to production.

  • Directs, through the staff, emergency and preventive maintenance repairs for operational support of the entire facility. Provides planning direction regarding equipment condition and identifies potential equipment replacement needs. Monitors essential replacement parts for equipment and coordinates OEM support interactions. The best candidates will be highly technical and understand Reliability Centered Maintenance, automation, safety integration and data collection.

  • Coordinates activities of the staff to minimize interruptions of critical operations. Develops overall maintenance schedule priorities. Provides general maintenance line-up for work schedules on all three shifts. Supports all maintenance activities.

  • Oversee the management of the office and facility layouts. Involves overseeing the management of staff and contracted engineers who do design work for capital and expensed projects.

  • Keeps facility management informed of special problems and status of maintenance projects and recommends changes to improve maintenance procedures.

  • The position manages a work unit of primarily management/professional employees where monitoring and reviewing work of subordinates is required as well as training, developing and mentoring. The position is responsible for all personnel issues and performance evaluation of subordinates and handles union grievance procedures through the second step.

  • Typical internal customers include employees from two or more work groups in a Division. The position's primary customers are internal. The position is challenged to carefully evaluate problems and review a large number of possible solutions before selecting one option. Problems may be complex and can require the incumbent to develop solutions. The incumbent sets priorities and establishes a work plan in order to complete broadly defined assignments and achieve desired results. Impacts key quality goals including Customer Satisfaction, Continuous Improvement, Timeliness, Accuracy, Efficiency, Cost Savings, Process Quality, Part Quality, Internal Quality Certification, ISO 9000 Certification, etc. The position monitors and reports on key quality measures for the measure(s) stated.

• Participates in developing or enhancing manufacturing applications and subsystems.
• Addresses software and application requirements while ensuring regulatory compliance and reporting.
• Evaluates opportunities and challenges of integrating existing and new applications.
• Compares and analyzes competitors' manufacturing systems environments.
• Monitors high-level data flows between the various information systems.

Plant Facilities Management: Knowledge of processes, methodologies and techniques used to manage plant facilities; ability to handle the full spectrum of activities for managing and maintaining physical facilities and infrastructure.
Level Extensive Experience:
• Works with the installation, maintenance and upkeep for a large or multiple facilities.
• Monitors environmental, safety and equipment requirements and conditions.
• Participates in the development of change, contingency and back-up or recovery plans.
• Deals effectively with customers and vendor support staff to resolve routine problems.
• Manages space planning processes and establishes requirements for staff and equipment.
• Monitors processes and procedures for developing and maintaining building security to ensure regulatory compliance.

Supplier Management - MFG: Knowledge of processes and methods to effectively manage business relationships and transactions with suppliers of raw materials or product components; ability to apply related knowledge, experience and skills into real practice.
Level Extensive Experience:
• Facilitates supplier partnering arrangements that share risk and reward.
• Monitors supplier performance; works to resolve discrepancies between performance and agreements.
• Develops quality standards and controls for suppliers.
• Builds and maintains partnerships with multiple and/or large suppliers.
• Evaluates issues and terminates supplier relationships as appropriate; works with legal departments.
• Ensures the fulfillment of report and record-keeping requirements.
