Our Product Support and Logistics Division (PSLD) is one of the most innovative divisions within Caterpillar. In PSLD, as within all of Caterpillar, our priority is our customers and helping them build a better world. What You Will Do:

As the Engineering Manager, you will coach, guide, and facilitate the development of a work group to develop collaborative relationships among their peers, customers, suppliers, and other functional groups to ensure goals are achieved. You will create and maintain an organizational climate/culture which encourages innovation, collaboration, excitement/commitment, and a sense of urgency towards business success. You will continually learn and stay abreast of innovative technology, mentor, and coach your immediate work group, and deepen your professional network.

The Materials Technology and Rubber Components Group in Seals, Tube and Hardware is responsible for all rubber materials and components Caterpillar manufactures. In this role you will have an opportunity to lead a high-performing team of Chemists, Material Scientists and Engineers in the design and development of innovative new product technologies for rubber and sealing products.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Posses a fundamental understanding of elastomeric materials, both from reading/learning and hands on experience.
  • Lead work group to complete objectives in; development of new materials and components, field and factory quality issue resolution, continuous process and product improvement, and cost reduction pull through.
  • Managing staffing, development, and performance management programs for engineering teams of ten (10) individuals.
  • Providing specialized engineering technical support and consulting services to various areas of the organization.
  • Management of high-impact, short and long duration engineering initiatives, and projects to profitable growth; ensuring achievement of engineering plan and product quality.
  • Other duties as assigned by Caterpillar management from time-to-time.

Basic Skills/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering discipline.
  • Planning: Provides the right level of detail as input for strategic plan development. Demonstrates the value and necessity of linking tactical plans to overall strategic plan. Ensures attention to the detail and dependencies of existing departmental-level plans. Plans for allocation of resources in line with unit goals, technical and business objectives. Ensures the planning process is integrated with the overall business plan.
  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Differentiates assumptions, perspectives, and historical frameworks. Evaluates past decisions for insights to improve decision-making process. Assesses and validates decision options and points and predicts their potential impact. Advises others in analyzing and synthesizing relevant data and assessing alternatives. Uses effective decision-making approaches such as consultative, command, or consensus.
  • Technical Excellence: Advises others on the assessment and provision of a technical solutions. Engages appropriate subject matter resources to effectively resolve technical issues. Mentors’ others to enhance their technical competence and its application to achieve more effective technical solutions. Coaches’ others in promoting, defining, analyzing, and providing superior technical solutions to business problems. Provides effective solutions to moderate technical challenges through strong technical competence, effectively examining implications of events and issues.
  • Project Management: Utilizes preferred tools, techniques, and methods for estimating project cost and time. Plans, estimates, staff, organizes and monitors significant projects. Conducts regular and ad-hoc project reviews with project team, sponsors, and clients. Communicates reporting requirements; creates monitoring and control mechanisms.
  • The ability to travel both domestically and internationally up to 10% of the time.

Top Candidates will also have:

  • Experience with New Product Introduction (NPI)/Continuous Process Improvement (CPI)/Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) processes and tools relevant to L1/L2 components.
  • Experience with regulatory compliance requirements (Restriction of Hazardous Substances and Registration, Evaluation, & Authorization of Chemicals).
  • Knowledge of Caterpillar products and product applications.
  • Effective Communications: Reviews others’ writing or presentations and provides feedback. Adapts documents and presentations for the intended audience. Demonstrates both empathy and assertiveness when communicating a need or defending a position. Communicates well downward, upward, and outward. Employs appropriate methods of persuasion when soliciting agreement.
  • Collaborating Globally: Participates in brainstorming sessions to share new ideas and complete group tasks. Recognizes and adapts to differences in background, culture, language and work style, when working with others. Builds a network of colleagues from other areas with diverse expertise and capabilities.
  • Managing People: Anticipates and manages difficult interpersonal situations and conflicts; resolves them ot mutual satisfaction. Implements coaching and mentoring programs to ensure holistic development of employees. Monitors employee morale and satisfaction; recognizes employee contributions and achievements. Regularly review employee performance and provides constructive feedback.
