This Machine System Integration Engineering Specialist role in Caterpillar’s Excavation Division (EXD) is focused on the design and delivery of the next generation hardware improvements and advanced control software across the EXD product lineup including hydraulic excavators, forestry products, material handlers, and work tools. The candidate will lead the design, development, integration, and testing of machine control systems impacting base machine performance, tool control systems, and advanced operator assist and semi-autonomous features.
What You Will Do:
- Engage teams and Lead New Product Introduction (NPI) and Annual Product Update (APU) projects to implement solutions from pre-launch through production.
- Work directly with customers, operators, process partners and regulatory teams to define system and component requirements.
- Drive technology and software strategy across the diverse EXD product portfolio.
- Lead cross functional teams on development projects and field issue resolution while mentoring engineers in the process.
- Utilize model-based development tools, such as Matlab/Simulink to perform system analysis and software design.
- Perform on-machine development activities to ensure machine level performance and feature design targets are met.
What You Will Have:
Education: Engineering or computer science degree is required
Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Must have the ability to identify critical gaps, next actions, and act to resolve issues with minimal oversight. An emphasis on initiative and strong technical insight.
Effective Communication: Must have strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to communicate technical information effectively to a culturally diverse work group.
Engineering: 8+ years of experience working with control systems solutions, hydraulics components, or software.
Problem Solving: 4+ years of project leadership experience that includes knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems. Ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations and solutions.
Top Candidates Will Also Have:
- 2+ years of at least one of the following experiences:
- Experience developing and testing control systems solutions.
- Experience with electro-hydraulics such as implements and hydrostatic systems.
- Experience working with heavy equipment and understanding how customers/operators utilize our equipment in various applications.

- This position requires 3 days onsite per week in Peoria, IL
