The Industrial Power Systems Division of Caterpillar currently has an opening for a Sr. Engineer – Design/Validation, Industrial Engines for Valve Train on the Core Engine Systems & Components team. As a senior engineer, you will be part of the team that has design control responsibility for all valve train components and systems for IPSD-Large engine platforms C7.2 – C18. In this role you will have the opportunity to work on a broad range of projects on the valve train system that impact the cost, quality, serviceability, warranty, and aftermarket. You will be expected to engage with suppliers, dealers, customers, and a multitude of other Caterpillar organizations. You will be part of a small team focused on a critical, complex system and you will be given significant responsibility and consequently will have a large impact on IPSD’s engines and our business.

As we develop our engines to meet new emissions regulations and to run on alternative fuels such as natural gas and hydrogen, our engine designs must evolve to accommodate new technologies and boundary conditions. The valve train is a key system to enabling the engine of the future. We are also working on supplier resiliency and cost reduction initiatives, as well as extending service intervals. Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a validation specialist within the valve mech team to help facilitate the planning of validation tasks as well as the data reduction and analysis.

  • Utilize both test data and simulation led design to improve valve train components & systems.

  • Work closely with the L4 engine platform teams to help assess valve mech system risks and develop mitigation activities to support a variety of NPI programs. Communicate progress to L4 job owners and present relevant material in design reviews.

  • Engage closely with suppliers on concurrent product and process designs along with the deployment of capital to achieve our performance, quality, delivery, and financial objectives.

  • Execute maintenance activities such as factory and customer problem resolution, cost reduction and robustness improvement projects.

  • Travel, including domestic and international, to visit manufacturing facilities, suppliers, and customers is expected but would generally not exceed 10% of the time.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering Program or closely related field

  • 5 years of relevant work experience

  • Proficiency in Pro/E Creo 3D Modelling

  • Validation experience with demonstrated ability to take raw data and process it so that the results are clearly communicated.

  • Strong desire to grow, learn, and contribute to Caterpillar and the Team’s goals.

  • Recognized as a team player, with solid communication and collaboration skills.

  • Demonstrated initiative and accountability.

  • HD Diesel engine design, test, or simulation experience – ideally with core engine components & systems

  • Analytical skills and the ability to bring creative solutions to challenging problems.
