Job Description:

The Industrial Power Systems Division currently has a need for a Senior Design Engineer reporting to the Engineering Manager of the Engine Electronic Systems Group located in Mossville, IL. This position will be responsible for delivery and quality control of engine software for the 9-18L engine size used across a wide range of Caterpillar applications.


In this role, you will work closely with broad range of engine systems, performance, and software teams to coordinate and deliver software files that will meet the engine platform requirements and timelines. The successful candidate will add value both as an individual contributor and as a team leader.

Job Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead team of software engineers and analysts to archive and provide software files for engine development and production.

  • Develop and maintain software releasing plans with the team lead engineer.

  • Monitor and provide monthly software quality status for engineering managers.

  • Collaborate with a global team to deliver per program objectives

  • Implement software improvement processes and training to ensure teams efficiently develop engine software.

  • Develop deep understanding of software engine calibrations to ensure process conformance, documentation, and quality.

  • Support and Lead Built-In-Quality (BIQ) efforts to improve software development and delivery process efficiencies.

  • Communicate technical information to team members and process partners.

  • Contribute to establishing strategies for new software processes and architectures.

  • Some travel (<5%) to Suppliers and Caterpillar manufacturing facilities will be required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • General Experience – Bachelor degree in an accredited Engineering or computer science field plus 5 years of engineering experience, or a Masters degree in an accredited Engineering field plus 4 years of engineering experience.

  • Specialized Experience – 1 to 3 years of experience in engine performance development and calibration, embedded software development, or software testing and validation.

  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in work group, as well as employees in other world-wide Caterpillar business units

Top Candidates Will Have:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in an accredited Engineering curriculum

  • The ability to effectively develop and manage complex project plans, starting at concept and ending at final engine production

  • Experience collaborating with global engineering process partners

  • Basic understanding of engine design and performance concepts

  • Design or test experience for embedded software or controls

  • Prior experience with software development tools such as Vector Calibration Data Management (vCDM), Hardware In Loop (HIL) testing, or SimApp.

  • Strong problem solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong Interpersonal & communication skills

  • Self-starter with good multitasking skills to optimize and deliver desired results under challenging requirements of quality and timeline.
