Job Description:

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

The Digital Worker Designer is responsible for designing and implementing governed, enterprise‑ready AI digital worker identities that perform work traditionally done by human roles. This role translates business and operational needs into clearly defined digital worker responsibilities, behaviors, and guardrails, and brings those designs into production on enterprise AI platforms.

Operating with broad autonomy, the Digital Worker Designer partners with business, functional, and technical stakeholders to define what digital workers do, how they make decisions, what information they can access, and when work must escalate to humans. This role is accountable from concept through implementation, ensuring digital workers are operational, trusted, auditable, and delivering measurable business outcomes. The role also establishes repeatable patterns and standards that enable scalable adoption of AI‑driven work across the enterprise.

What You Will Do:

Digital Worker Identity Design

  • Design digital worker identities that clearly define:

    • Purpose, scope of responsibility, and expected outcomes

    • Personal, authority level, and decision ownership

    • Decision boundaries, escalation rules, and human handoff models

    • Trust, safety, and policy constraints

  • Ensure each digital worker identity is fit‑for‑purpose, auditable, reusable, and aligned to enterprise governance standards.

Reasoning and Behavior Design

  • Design how digital workers:

    • Interpret inputs, context, and user intent

    • Apply rules, policies, and structured reasoning

    • Decide when to act autonomously versus escalate to a human

    • Maintain consistency and reliability across interactions

  • Translate human judgment into structured, repeatable digital worker behavior.

Knowledge, Data, and Context Enablement

  • Define what knowledge, data, and contextual information digital workers are permitted to access.

  • Ensure digital worker responses and actions are grounded in approved, authoritative sources.

  • Design behavior to appropriately handle uncertainty, incomplete data, or conflicting information.

Governance, Risk, and Trust

  • Define guardrails that ensure digital workers operate within approved policies, permissions, and risk tolerances.

  • Design escalation and exception‑handling models to protect users and the enterprise.

  • Validate digital worker behavior through testing and iteration to ensure reliability, quality, and trust.

Platform and Pattern Enablement

  • Implement and evolve digital worker identities using enterprise AI platforms (e.g., Copilot, Sidekick).

  • Create and maintain reusable design patterns, standards, and documentation for digital worker design.

  • Adapt designs as platforms, tools, policies, and enterprise needs evolve.

  • Own the implementation of digital worker identities from concept to production, configuring and deploying designs on enterprise AI platforms and ensuring they operate reliably, safely, and as intended in real‑world workflows.

Measurement and Continuous Improvement

  • Define success measures for each digital worker use case (e.g., quality, consistency, cycle time, effort reduction).

  • Monitor digital worker effectiveness and refine identity designs over time.

  • Support scaling from individual digital workers to portfolios of digital workers across domains.

What You Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in technology, operations, knowledge management, or a related field.

  • Experience translating business or operational requirements into automated, decision‑based, or workflow‑driven solutions.

  • Strong ability to analyze human roles and decompose them into responsibilities, rules, and decision points.

  • Experience working in cross‑functional environments with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

  • Comfort operating in emerging, evolving problem spaces with incomplete or ambiguous requirements.

Top Candidates Will Also Have:

  • Experience with AI agents, virtual assistants, automation platforms, or decision systems.

  • Understanding of concepts such as retrieval‑augmented generation (RAG), decision automation, or workflow orchestration.

  • Experience designing governance, risk controls, or quality frameworks for automation or AI‑enabled solutions.

  • Familiarity with enterprise AI platforms such as Copilot, Sidekick, or similar tools.

Additional Info:

  • The ideal location for this role is East Peoria-IL, Irving-TX

  • This position may require 20% travel.
