Overview
The Certified or Registered Medical Assistant provides essential clinical and administrative support to healthcare teams. By streamlining patient care and office operations, they ensure a seamless experience for both staff and patients during examinations and treatments.
Responsibilities
- Patient Rooming: Efficiently gather patient history (family, social, surgical), record chief complaints, and perform medication reconciliation upon arrival.
- Medical Procedures: Perform diagnostic tests and clinical procedures, including:
- Urinary catheterization and bladder scanning.
- Suture/staple removal and cast application/removal.
- Point-of-care testing and TB skin test readings.
- Medication Administration: Administer vaccines and medications per provider orders, including the ability to compound or dilute medications following competency testing.
- Specialty Care: Conduct detailed medical history intakes for prenatal appointments and manage lab results from RN worklists.
- Direct Communication: Manage telephone interactions with patients, families, pharmacies, and healthcare facilities to gather information or relay provider instructions.
- Health Education: Provide patients with written and verbal education regarding procedures, medications, and follow-up care using approved internal and external resources.
- Prescription Management: Facilitate prescription refills and pharmacy notifications according to department protocols and EMR documentation standards.
- Front Office Tasks: Oversee patient check-in/out, appointment scheduling, and verification of benefits.
- Care Coordination: Process prior authorizations and coordinate referrals or specialized testing.
- Compliance & Excellence: Maintain department-specific competencies in equipment handling and specialty training while excelling in team building and problem-solving.
Qualifications
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Medical Technologists (AMT)
- Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) – NAHP
- Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) – National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Allied Health (AAH) or American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association (AHA) (Required within 30 days of hire)
- High School Diploma or GED required
