The Department of Communication, within the Slane College of Communications and Fine Arts at Bradley University, seeks candidates committed to innovative teaching and meaningful service in the area of public speaking, oral communication, and foundational communication skills instruction. Bradley University’s Oral Communication Process Program (COM103) is nationally recognized, designated as a National Communication Association (NCA) Program of Excellence, reflecting a strong commitment to excellence in communication education, student success, and nationally recognized teaching practices. COM 103 serves as the foundational communication course for students across the university and plays a central role in advancing these standards of excellence.

Job Summary/Basic Function

Required: Experience teaching public speaking, oral communication, interpersonal communication, or related communication coursework with a demonstrated commitment to student-centered instruction and high-impact teaching practices.

The successful candidate will teach COM 103: Oral Communication Process, Bradley University’s foundational basic course in communication. COM 103 emphasizes public speaking, audience analysis, organization and delivery of speeches, informative and persuasive speaking, listening, critical thinking, and ethical communication practices. The number of sections will be determined by need each semester.

This is an in-person course, offered each Fall and Spring semester.

Candidates should demonstrate the ability to:

  • Teach foundational public speaking and presentation skills to students from a wide range of majors and academic backgrounds
  • Foster inclusive classroom environments that support communication confidence and student engagement
  • Provide effective feedback on speech preparation, delivery, and presentation performance
  • Support students in developing oral communication competencies aligned with university-wide learning outcomes
  • Utilize instructional technologies and active learning strategies to enhance student success

Also desirable:

  • Experience teaching the basic communication course at the college level
  • Familiarity with communication assessment practices and speech evaluation
  • Experience in argumentation, civic discourse, or communication across the curriculum
  • Ability to contribute to departmental initiatives supporting speech education and student success

Required Education

Master’s degree in Communication, Speech Communication, Communication Studies, Rhetoric, or a closely related field required.
